| Annual Holiday Toy Drive to Benefit Blythedale Children's Hospital |
Each year the members of the Larchmont Professional Firefighters Association sponsor a Holiday Toy Drive to benefit the children from Blythedale Children's Hospital. Located in Valhalla, New York. As their website states, "Blythedale is a children's hospital dedicated to improving the health status and quality of life of children with complex medical and rehabilitative needs."
Our members collect new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls of all ages at Fire Headquarters beginning in November, continuing through to Christmas. We also host a morning breakfast at the Larchmont American Legion where the children of our community, and their families, can meet Santa Claus. Santa arrives by helicopter, courtesy of StatFlight from Westchester County Medical Center. This has been a Larchmont tradition for many years. Our breakfast has been a successful fundraising endeavor that has allowed us to donate many different items that were not in the normal operating budget of the hospital, yet were essential in helping the children's quality of life during their stays more tolerable.
The members of Local 895 also assist each year at the WPLJ holiday fundraising party held at the hospital, as well as the staff party for the children where we provide a firefighter dressed as Santa, and other off duty members assist in passing out gifts. Over the years, it has been a very rewarding experience for our members and the children.
